Rezulin

Rezulin, (generically known as Troglitazone), is a prescription-only drug manufactured by Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals, a division of Warner-Lambert. It was approved by the FDA and marketed for sale in January, 1997 to treat Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. While on the market, Rezulin generated over $1.8 billion in sales.

Rezulin was beneficial for Type 2 diabetics in that it helped regulate blood glucose levels that could not be controlled by other forms of therapy. However, it quickly became clear that Rezulin's severe side effects far outweighed its benefits.

Just eight months after Rezulin was introduced into the market, numerous reports of liver failure were received by the FDA. The FDA then ordered the manufacturer to use stronger warning labels. Letters were also written to doctors that instructed them to perform liver enzyme tests to measure liver toxicity. Four changes were made to warning labels, and four letters were sent to doctors before Rezulin was finally withdrawn from the market in March, 2000. Upon its withdrawal, 94 reports of liver failure had been linked to Rezulin, with 63 reported liver poisoning deaths.

If you or someone you care about has been taking Rezulin and experienced any liver problems, please fill out our Case Review Contact Form to the right on this page to find out what your case is worth.
