Decades of Trial Experience

Despite the breadth of our legal practice, our firm’s singular focus is on trying lawsuits to verdict.  The truth is that many so-called “trial lawyers” have actually tried few, if any, cases to verdict.  By contrast, our board certified attorneys* have tried hundreds of cases and have been recognized for their trial acumen by being selected to the Super Lawyers List, a Thomson Reuters publication, in the State of Texas for several years in a row. **

Whether litigating a securities fraud case, a product liability case or an auto accident case, our lawyers approach every case with the assumption that it will be tried to a jury.  While we aggressively seek beneficial settlements for our we also prepare each case for trial from the moment we are retained, demonstrating to our opponents our commitment and resolve to try the case if necessary.

The fact is, experienced adversaries can tell which lawyers have the commitment and resources to take their clients’ claims to trial and which are simply looking for a quick and easy settlement.  Because of our experience, reputation and results, our opponents know that the lawyers at Heygood, Orr & Pearson are eager to take our clients’ cases to trial and will leave no stone unturned to make sure they get the results they deserve. By preparing each case as if it will be tried, we are able to achieve better results for our clients, whether through a verdict or settlement. We also prepare each case for trial from the moment we are retained, demonstrating to our opponents our commitment and resolve to try the case if necessary.

One of the things that sets Heygood, Orr & Pearson apart from other law firms is the fact that each of our attorneys is a “trial lawyer” in the truest sense.  In fact, every one of our attorneys has trial experience, ranging from auto accident cases to commercial fraud cases to pharmaceutical liability cases.  As a result of our singular focus on trying cases to verdict in courtrooms across the United States:

  • Our Firm’s attorneys have tried over 200 cases to verdict.
  • All three named partners have been selected by their peers to the Super Lawyers List (a Thomson Reuters publication), an honor given to only the top 5% of all attorneys in Texas, for several years in a row. **
  • Our attorneys are Board Certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (Jim Orr, Michael E. Heygood).
  • We have achieved verdicts and settlements for our clients totaling more than $200 million.
  • Our law firm has tried 60% of all U.S. cases involving fentanyl pain patches and is the leading law firm in the country pursuing such cases.
  • All three named partners are Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. *
  • Over the last few years, our law firm has invested more than $5 million of our own money in case expenses while prosecuting our clients’ cases.
  • In addition to our trial results, the firm negotiated settlements for our clients totaling more than $50 million in 2010 alone.

Class action lawsuit filed by HO&P against Life Partners, Inc. will move forward following federal appeals court ruling

Heygood, Orr & Pearson is currently pursuing a putative class action lawsuits against Life Partners, Inc., a company that specializes in “life settlement” investments. A “life settlement” is the sale of an existing life insurance policy by the policyholder to another party. By selling a life insurance policy, the policyholder receives an immediate cash payment while the purchaser takes an ownership interest in the policy at a discount to its face value and later receives the full amount of the death benefit paid out under the policy when the insured dies. The less that a life settlement purchaser pays to the insurer prior to the policy maturing, the greater the yield on the investment. Read the full article…
