Class action lawsuit filed against Fresenius over Granuflo, Naturalyte dialysis solutions

The heir of a Pennsylvania man who died after receiving dialysis treatment manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care North America has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of other patients who were injured by the company’s products. Fresenius is the maker of two dialysis treatments—Granuflo and Naturalyte—that have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and other cardiac problems.

GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and Naturalyte Liquid Acid Concentrate are dialysates used in hemodialysis treatment for patients with kidney disease. These products help to neutralize acid byproducts in the blood for patients with renal failure or other kidney problems. According to allegations against Fresenius, Granuflo and Naturalyte are converted to bicarbonate at a higher rate than other kidney dialysis solutions. This can place patients at risk of suffering a heart attack, cardiac arrest, or sudden death due to excessive bicarbonate in their blood.

In addition to the Pennsylvania class action lawsuit, at least 119 lawsuits against Fresenius have been filed on behalf of patients who suffered severe heart injury after undergoing hemodialysis treatment with Granuflo or Naturalyte. According to the other lawsuits filed against the company, Fresenius failed to properly warn patients that Granuflo and Naturalyte carried a higher risk of side effects than other dialysis products. Lawyers involved in these proceedings expect that additional lawsuits will be filed across the U.S. in 2013 as more patients become aware of the Naturalyte and Granuflo litigation.
