Corpus Christi nightclub must pay $18 million in lawsuit over deadly drunk driving crash

In June 2011, Jonathan Palacios spent an evening drinking at Cabaret and Pocket’s Billiards, two bars in Corpus Christi, Texas. Later, while driving the wrong way on North Padre Island Drive, Palacios crashed head-on into another car driven by 18-year-old Bryant Hernandez. The accident killed both drivers.

The Hernandez family sued the bars claiming they over-served Palacios. During trial, friends of Palacios testified about a night of drinking that included rounds of beers and shots. Police say test results showed Palacios had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his bloodstream.

A former bartender at Pockets Billiard’s has said her bosses told her to continue serving Palacios. The lawsuit alleged that a bouncer from one of the bars even escorted Palacios to his car before allowing him to get behind the wheel.

A jury has now returned an $18.75 million verdict to the family of Bryant Hernandez in a judgment against the Cabaret of Corpus Christi. Pockets Billiards previously settled out of court.
