CPSC announce safety recalls of several bicycles over injury risk

by Charles Miller

Summer always finds more people getting on bicycles. This summer, however, has found the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission announcing several safety-related recalls of bicycles. Below are a few of the recall announcements regarding bicycles this summer.

Dynacraft 20 inch Avigo Turn N Burn youth bicycles

On July 31, Dynacraft recalled about 3,100 Avigo youth bicycles because the front wheel on the 20-inch Avigo youth bicycle can detach, posing a fall hazard. The bikes involved were sold exclusively at Toys “R” Us between September 2013 and June 2014 for $130. Dynacraft has received a report of a consumer who fell and sustained scrapes and abrasions when the front wheel detached.

The recall involves 20 inch Avigo Turn N Burn youth bicycles with model number 8107-62. The model number and date of manufacture, “08202013,” are printed on a data label on the frame’s seat tube. The bicycles have a silver frame, blue handlebars and black front fork with blue accents, hand brakes and a kickstand.

According to the CPSC, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle and contact Dynacraft to arrange for a free repair. Dynacraft can be reached at (800) 551-0032 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or online at www.dynacraftbike.com.

East Coast Cycle Trayl TRN 29-inch hardtail mountain bikes

One week earlier, CPSC announced that East Coast Cycle Supply was recalling Trayl TRN Mountain Bikes due to a crash hazard. The brakes can fail to stop riders within the distances required by federal regulations. East Coast Cycle Supply has received one report of the braking system taking longer to stop than allowed by federal regulation. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported to the company.

This recall involves all Trayl TRN 29-inch hardtail mountain bikes. The bike has a black and green frame with a white front fork. The word Trayl is in white on the underside of the down tube and in green on the top side of the down tube. The Trayl logo appears as the “Y” in the word.

The CPSC states that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and return them to Sports Authority for a free repair. East Coast Cycle Supply’s toll-free number is (844) 322-9253 and email is customerservice@eccyclesupply.com.

Scott and Trek bikes with SR Suntour Front Forks

In late June, Scott and Trek announced the recall of bicycles with SR Suntour Front Forks due to a crash hazard. According to the announcement, the front forks on 13 models of Scott and 11 models of Trek 2011, 2012 and 2013 bicycles can break. The recall involves about 5,200 forks on Scott bicycles and about 120,000 forks on Trek bicycles. The CPSC website includes information identifying the specific bikes involved in the recall,

Trek has received 28 reports of broken forks. Five injuries have been reported to Trek, including minor bruises, a separated shoulder and broken bones. Scott has received one report of a broken SR Suntour fork.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles according to the CSPC. Consumers with recalled Scott bicycles should take them to an authorized Scott dealer for a free repair of the NEX model or a free replacement lower fork for the NCX model. Consumers with recalled Trek bicycles should take them to an authorized Trek dealer for a free repair of NEX, XCM and XCT models or a free replacement of the NRX model.
