FDA warns consumers about fake Ebola virus drugs

by Eric Pearson

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to be aware of products claiming to prevent or treat the Ebola virus. According to the FDA, it has received consumer complaints about a variety of products claiming to either prevent the Ebola virus or treat the infection. In reality, there are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat Ebola.

Although there are experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments in the early stages of product development, nothing has yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness. Furthermore, it is illegal for dietary supplements to claim to prevent or cure disease. The FDA is warning all those promoting such unapproved and fraudulent products to take immediate action to correct or remove these claims or face potential FDA action.

Ebola is the cause of a viral hemorrhagic fever disease. The symptoms include fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite, and abnormal bleeding.

In the United States, Ebola is not a water-borne or food-borne illness and is not transmitted through the air, according the FDA. Ebola is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, or with objects like needles that have been contaminated with the virus. The FDA states that people who do not show symptoms are not contagious.
