Lawyers involved in the DePuy Pinnacle multidistrict litigation currently underway in Texas say that more than 2,900 lawsuits against DePuy have already been filed by users of the company’s Pinnacle hip replacements. The lawsuits allege that DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip replacements are more likely to cause complications in patients who receive the device than other brands of hip replacements.
Concerns about the safety of metal-on-metal hip replacements became widespread in August 2010 when DePuy issued a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System hip replacements. The company ordered the recall after researchers found that the hip replacements were more likely to be replaced prematurely than other artificial hip implants.
Following the DePuy recall, investigators found that the problems with metal-on-metal hip replacements were not limited to DePuy ASR implants alone. Studies revealed that all metal-on-metal hip replacements could cause damage at the site of the implant due to metal particles that are shed through normal wear and tear on the device. These particles can caused broken bones or loosening of the implant, as well as chromium or cobalt poisoning from the presence of metal fragments in the bloodstream.
The Texas DePuy lawsuits involve the metal-on-metal version of the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement which use the Ultamet metal liner. The FDA is currently investigating the safety of metal-on-metal hip replacements, which the agency says may be more dangerous than hip replacements that are made out of other materials.
