John “Jay” Pate joined Heygood, Orr & Pearson in 2008 and has accumulated diverse civil litigation experience in complex tort litigation with particular emphasis on medical malpractice, pharmaceutical and medical device product liability, personal injury, wrongful death and intellectual property.
While attending law school at the University of Texas, Mr. Pate was a senior editor of the Texas Review of Law and Politics.
Mr. Pate has trial experience in numerous state and federal courts throughout the country, having tried several medical malpractice and product liability cases to verdict as both first and second chair counsel in states such as Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Tennessee. In addition, Mr. Pate has served as lead counsel in medical malpractice and product liability cases filed and litigated in state and federal courts across the country, including Florida, Connecticut, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, California and Nebraska, among other jurisdictions.
Additionally, Mr. Pate has been leading the firm’s mass tort practice concerning state and federal multidistrict litigation involving numerous pharmaceutical, medical device and other products including Actos, transvaginal mesh, talcum powder, hip implants, IVC filters and Roundup.
Mr. Pate is also a registered patent attorney licensed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is married and a father to a baby girl.
