Practice Areas

Rather than focusing our practice on a single area of the law, our focus is on trying cases to verdict.  The extensive trial experience of our board certified attorneys* allows us to present our client’s disputes to a jury in the most persuasive manner possible, whether the case is a complex business dispute or a serious personal injury case.

Heygood, Orr & Pearson accepts cases in the following areas:

Class Action Litigation

Class action litigation is brought by a group of people who have been similarly harmed by the same party or entity.  There are many benefits to class action suits, not only for the plaintiffs, but for the court system as well.  In recent years, laws have been passed that make the successful resolution of class action suits more difficult for plaintiffs.  As a result, successful verdicts or settlements in class action suits depend more than ever on the kind of expert legal representation you can expect from the attorneys at Heygood, Orr & Pearson.

Commercial Litigation

Commercial litigation involves business disputes including claims for breach of contract, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and other similar tort and contract claims. Due to the complex nature of business disputes, having experienced and talented legal representation is vital to obtaining a successful outcome.  The attorneys at Heygood, Orr & Pearson have represented dozens of clients in commercial cases ranging in value from tens of thousands of dollars to tens of millions.

Insurance Litigation

Both legally and ethically, insurance companies in the U.S. owe their clients a duty of “good faith and fair dealing,” meaning they must honor the insurance policy with their insured.  When an insurance company violates an insured’s rights or does not treat the policyholder fairly, they have committed insurance bad faith. When a valid claim is denied through bad faith insurance practices, compensatory and/or punitive damages may be awarded.  Heygood, Orr & Pearson is committed to holding insurance companies responsible for their actions, especially towards policyholders in times of tragedy or loss.

Intellectual Property Litigation

Intellectual property refers to the rights of a person to intangible property such as patents, trademarks and copyrights.  Intellectual property litigation is intricate and requires a highly dedicated and efficient attorney.  The team at Heygood, Orr & Pearson has extensive experience with claims involving a variety of intellectual property issues.

Personal Injury Lawsuits

The reasons for personal injury claims are numerous and varied. Personal injury generally refers to situations in which a person is harmed or killed due to the negligent actions of another party. Proving such negligence can be difficult, and skilled legal representation is required to obtain the highest possible compensation for physical, emotional and psychological injuries. Heygood, Orr & Pearson has the financial resources and the experience to achieve the best possible recovery for its clients.

Pharmaceutical Liability

The pharmaceutical and medical device industries bring in hundreds of billions of dollars annually. The greed resulting from this monumental earning capacity often causes manufacturers to put the safety of consumers at risk by designing, manufacturing and selling dangerous or defective drugs and devices.  Heygood, Orr & Pearson has worked tirelessly for many years to hold drug companies and medical device manufacturers responsible for injuries and death caused by their careless behavior.

Product Liability Lawsuits

Product liability litigation occurs when harm or death befalls a consumer from proper use of a defective or dangerous product. If the design, manufacturing or marketing of a product causes it to be dangerous to consumers who use it as intended, then victims who are hurt or the families of those killed may file a product liability claim.  Heygood, Orr & Pearson has litigated hundreds of product liability cases to favorable results for its clients.

Qui Tam Litigation

Unfortunately, more individuals and entities defraud the government than the government has resources to pursue.  Qui tam litigation allows a private citizen with knowledge of the fraud, known as the whistleblower, to help the government recoup monies lost.  If the information leads to a recovery, the whistleblower may be awarded a portion of that money.  Heygood, Orr & Pearson has experience with the often complicated and highly specific claims that whistleblowers must submit in order to obtain a reward.
