Samsung has announced that it is recalled 2.8 million top-loading washing machines sold in the U.S. The company’s announcement concerning the recall comes roughly one month after federal regulators warned that the washing machines could cause injury to consumers using these products.
Samsung’s recall involves 34 models of washing machines sold by the company between 2011 and 2016. A full list of the washing machines involved in the recall can be found online. Front-loading washers sold by Samsung are not included in the recall.
According to the recall notice issued by Samsung, when large or bulky items are placed inside the machines, it can cause them to heavily vibrate or even explode. Samsung has received reports of washing machines that have exploded with such force that they caused debris to become embedded in nearby walls. In other cases, the recalled washing machines have levitated off the ground or pulled sockets from their screws.
According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, Samsung has received 733 reports of problems with the washers. Injuries that have been linked to the recalled machines include broken jaws, shoulder injuries, and other fall-related injuries. The CPSC says that in some cases, explosions from the Samsung washers were so violent that they caused the door of the machines to become detached, causing a risk of injuries due to impact.
Customers who purchased one of the recalled Samsung washing machines can elect to have a service technician come to their home and reinforce the machine for free. Customers who elect to have their washing machine reinforced will also receive a one year extension of warranty coverage for the machine. Customers who purchased one of the recalled washers within the last 30 days can elect to receive a full refund for the cost of the machine. Customers can also elect to receive a rebate good for the purchase of a new washing machine, either from Samsung or another brand.
Samsung says that problems with the recalled washers occur most often when bedding, water-resistant items, or other bulky items are washed on the high-speed cycle. The company says that until customers can have their washers replaced or repaired, bulkier items should be washed on the delicate or waterproof cycles.
The CSPC warning about Samsung’s washing machines came as the company was dealing with another recall for its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. Battery problems with about 2 million Galaxy Note 7s can cause the phones to overheat and catch on fire. Samsung tried to fix the problem earlier this year by switching battery suppliers; however, problems with the phones persisted. The FAA has banned Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on all flights – including checked baggage – in the U.S. due to the risk of fire.
